The Spirit of Luskentyre

A journey all about one month photographing the same beach on the Isle of Harris. This was one of the most incredible photographic projects I have done in my 30 years of landscape photography. I discovered so many hidden compositions over the month and the conditions over February and March in 2023 were more than I could have ever hoped for. Gale force winds, snow, massive waves and an encounter with the Aurora.

Most of the time in landscape photography we go to some incredible destinations and have a plan of a number of locations to go and photograph. But photography isn’t always about that epic shot.  A story is sometimes told in multiple photos as it is a story of progression, a transient landscape. In the 30 days I had on Luskentyre I started to appreciate the movement of the sand, the changes in light and find compositions that tell a different story to the classic shot that so many people have taken of this amazing location. A story of the spirit of Luskentyre Beach.

Massive thanks to

My great friend and videographer, Rick Bebbington who has written the foreword. Rick has been with me on many trips and was there for the first week helping to film the start of the adventure. He also was a huge help in producing and editing the film series, The Spirit of Luskentyre. I also wanted to give a massive thanks to Allie Pottinger, another amazing friend and talented artist. Allie joined me for week 3 and we will be having an exhibition together in September 2023. She did the illustrations throughout the book (including one of the cake shed!)
